Middle schools provide a core academic curriculum and exploratory or encore classes that integrate and support the core curriculum standards. Large middle schools are divided into smaller learning communities or middle school teams. Each team collaborates as a professional learning community and provides the structure to strengthen classroom instruction and improve student learning. In addition to the general curriculum, various specialized programs are offered to meet the unique needs of individual learners.
