Sixth-grade students explore the development of civilizations from the ancient world through the Enlightenment and major revolutions. They study civilizations including Babylon, Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome before examining the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation, Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment, Industrial Revolution, and French Revolution. 7th Grade

Seventh-grade students study American history from European exploration and colonization through the Civil War and Reconstruction, with an emphasis on the development of the United States and its system of government. Students examine the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, early presidencies, slavery and abolition, westward expansion, sectional conflict, and the Civil War. The course also includes focused study of South Dakota geography and the history, culture, and experiences of the Oceti Sakowin Oyate, including interactions among Native peoples, settlers, and governing bodies.

Eighth-grade students continue the study of U.S. history from the Gilded Age through the turn of the 21st century. Major topics include industrialization and immigration, the Progressive Era, World Wars I and II, the Roaring Twenties and Great Depression, the Cold War, Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam War, the end of the Cold War, September 11, and the War on Terror. Students also examine Native American experiences, including those in South Dakota, while strengthening their ability to analyze historical sources, construct arguments, and use evidence to explain significant events and changes in American history.
