Last week at the Instructional Planning Center, office staff took a mid-afternoon "Try Something New" break! Fine Arts Coordinator Shane Wueben led the group in a lesson on how to play the recorder. A former educator himself, he was very patient and calm while instructing the group of adults on how to play an instrument introduced to most students in third grade. After covering the basics, the group was able to collaborate on a rousing rendition of Queen's "We Will Rock You." Even our office staff need to keep things fun sometimes!

Use these COLD days indoors to plan your fun in February! Air Madness, SF STORM, and LEVO are teaming up over President's Break to support Operation Hope & Caring - a fund that levels the playing field for SFSD students! See you Tuesday, February 20, 2024!

Please help us in congratulating Jefferson High School science teacher Kayla Hakari for being the McTeacher of The Month! Mrs. Hakari showed up to a teacher-staff meeting yesterday expecting it to be another regular staff meeting, but was surprised with an award, some funds for her classroom, and free McCafe! Kayla is always going above and beyond, and this recognition is a reflection of her dedication to all of her students.
❤️Congratulations! 🎉 And thank you for everything you do! 👏

Dangerous weather conditions mean all activities/events for SFSD students for the
evening of Fri., Jan 12 and all day Sat., Jan 13, 2024 are being postponed.

With all the disruptions in schedules due to weather, it's important that we remind students and parents/guardians that there is NO SCHOOL tomorrow (1/12/24) or Monday (1/15/24). The forecast looks frigid, so please keep warm and stay safe!

Watching a child learn how to read can seem like magic sometimes. To see the gears turn in their heads and realize how a mess of letters turns into words, how those words become sentences, and so on. But there is a science to reading and in this episode of Teacher Talk (presented by South Dakota Public Broadcasting) our speakers discuss the science of the "science of reading."

Last week the local non-profit Chariots For Children delivered bikes (and smiles 😃) to eight SFSD schools to use as incentives for students. 64 bikes total were delivered to the following schools: Hayward, Garfield, Axtell Park, Hawthorne, Lowell, Whittier, Laura B Anderson, and the CLC After-School Program. Thank you for your generosity CFC! You've made a meaningful and joyous impact in the holidays of many SFSD students!

Yesterday students at Eugene Field A+ Elementary got to experience a Multiple Intelligences Day based on the theme of "Hobbies". Presenters from the community came in to share their hobbies with the whole school! EFA chose this theme to introduce students to various hobbies that can be done indoors during winter months. Students got lots of ideas for fun new things to try, so we know they won't get bored over winter break!
