2022 district demographic report

The 2022-2023 Demographics Reports was presented during the second monthly meeting of the Board of Education. The information provided in this annual report highlights the District’s diversity, strengths, and opportunities as we continue to focus on being a leader in the state, region, and nation. 

Enrollment in the Sioux Falls School District has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. Official fall enrollment in the K-12 program is 24,231, an increase of 202 students over the previous year. Nearly 1,000 of our earliest learners benefit from preschool and early childhood opportunities provided in the public schools. 

The District is richly-diverse and welcomes students from across the world into Sioux Falls classrooms. Nearly 42% of students are racially diverse. The top five languages spoken in our families' homes include Spanish, Swahili, Nepali, Kunama, and Amharic. More than 2,600 students are receiving intensive instruction in the English language. 

Students who need additional social, academic, physical, and/or emotional support to ensure their success continues to thrive in the Sioux Falls School District. More than 3,500 students are served with Special Education resources. 

Daily instruction in all classrooms follows research-based best practices to improve graduation and completer rates, score higher on state and national assessments, and perform well on college readiness exams. SFSD prioritizes five key areas in its decision-making: Academic Success, Staff Excellence, Well-Being, Community Engagement, and The Effective Use of Resources. Our staff is striving to become the BEST school district in the nation and we are deeply committed to our mission: to educate and prepare each student to succeed in a changing world.
