Week Of Work

Welcome to the official start of the Week of Work here in South Dakota!

April 3-7, middle and high school students across the state are exposed to their future career opportunities through job shadowing, industry tours and other business-classroom connections. Week of Work is an initiative that was created a few years ago with the goal of guiding students, engaging local businesses and bolstering the future workforce.

Here in the Sioux Falls School District we’re proud to be exposing our students to these opportunities year round! The tireless work put forth by school counselors, success coordinators and teachers ensures that our students are always given the chance to explore their options for the future.

Exposure to future career opportunities starts at a young age in the SFSD. We offer opportunities to get students’ minds moving as early as 5th grade! Take the Career Cafe for example. For one afternoon per quarter, experts in their fields are brought in to teach students about possible future career paths. Presentations are quick, interactive, and FUN! Southeast Technical College brought in presenters in the fields of mechatronics, construction, horticulture, veterinary assistance and HVAC for this particular event. Interactions like these at a young age will help these students begin to connect the dots between their learning and future career opportunities.  This early exposure also helps learners explore new ideas before having to fully assess how they might fit within a certain career path.

Throughout the week we will continue to highlight all the ways that the SFSD helps students think about their future career choices and their next step after high school.
