Students meet with state legislators.

Sioux Falls School District student leaders and others from across the state recently met in Pierre to participate in the legislative process as part of a statewide project called, “Capitol Conversations.” Senator Lee Schoenbeck took the time to talk with students about his role in state government.

Participating students are part of the Jobs for America’s Graduates-South Dakota (JAG-SD) program, which is a leadership development and career exploration program for students. The program is offered at all four Sioux Falls High Schools.  Through “Capitol Conversations,” students were able to attend committee meetings, visit House and Senate floors, gain an understanding of lobbying and take tours of the Capitol in Pierre.

Since they first met in October 2022, JAG-SD students have been engaged with a variety of government leaders from their respective communities. Part of the “Capitol Conversations” project involves students reconnecting with their communities after the legislative session to understand the impact of the laws that were passed and the bills that were brought forward.
