Author C.S. Lewis wrote, “We read to know we are not alone.” Reading is truly the foundation of all learning, and students at three Sioux Falls elementary schools will soon experience this joy with support from a community volunteer.
Literacy Allies is a new program to support emerging readers at Anne Sullivan, Cleveland, and Terry Redlin. Students in Kindergarten through second grade will be paired with an adult “ally” to bring phonics into greater focus through letter sounds and recognition.
Business and community partners will serve as Literacy Allies who understand the importance of instilling a love for reading early. The hope is that young readers will make powerful connections between words and concepts in all subject areas, resulting in greater confidence and academic achievement. Hundreds of allies are needed for a one-hour commitment every other week.
