Three outstanding students from the Sioux Falls School District were recently recognized as finalists for the SME Women in Business Young Women of Excellence Scholarship, an honor that celebrates leadership, service, and a commitment to future success.

Young Women of Excellence Finalsits From Jefferson High School, seniors Learys Mercado-Castello and Khadidja Mahamed were named finalists, along with Rylan Kennett from Washington High School. Of the five individuals nominated, Khadidja was selected as this year's scholarship recipient, earning a $1,000 award to support her continued education and leadership journey thanks to a sponsorship from Avera Health.

Khadidja Mahamed named as Young Women of Excellence WinnerKhadidja's story is one of resilience, leadership, and purpose. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a young age, she has turned personal challenges into a passion for improving healthcare systems. She plans to pursue a degree in public health and continue on to Physician Assistant school, with the goal of helping create more equitable and culturally responsive care for others. A first-generation high school graduate, she has made a lasting impact at Jefferson High School, leading and founding student organizations, advocating for others, and building a strong sense of community among her peers.

Earlier this school year, Khadidja was also featured in our Seniors Who Shine series, which highlights students who are making a difference in their schools and beyond. Her story perfectly tells the compassion she brings to everything she does:

While Khadidja took home the scholarship, all three SFSD finalists demonstrated the qualities that define a Young Woman of Excellence. Learys Mercado-Castello and Rylan Kenneett each bring their own unique strengths and leadership skills to their school communities, and they are a strong reflection of the talent across our District.

The scholarship was awarded during the annual SME Women in Business event that took place on March 24th at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. This day-long experience brings together women from across the region for speakers, workshops, and a trade fair, culminating in an evening celebration that honors excellence and achievement. Students had the opportunity to take part in the full day of learning and networking, gaining insight and inspiration from women at every stage of their professional journeys. As one of the region's largest events focused on professional growth and leadership development, it offers an invaluable space to celebrate the impact of women in business.
