Sioux Falls' newest elementary school, currently under construction just southeast of George McGovern Elementary School, will be named for a woman who dedicated her life to service.
Marcella LeBeau Elementary School
Marcella LeBeau was born in October 1919 in Promise, South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. Throughout her life she served as an elder, politician, nurse, and military veteran. LeBeau earned her undergraduate nursing degree in 1942 from St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, South Dakota. She worked as a nurse in Pontiac, Michigan before enlisting in the United States Army Nurse Corp in 1943 to serve in World War II. LeBeau served in France, England, and Belgium under the 76th General Hospital Unit which included tending to service members during the Battle of the Bulge. She was a First Lieutenant when she left the Army. LeBeau served as a nurse for 31 years after leaving the Army. She was a member of the Cheyenne River Tribal Council and received many awards in her lifetime.
A committee made up of 25 members, including students, parents, teachers, community members, administrators, and a school board member reviewed hundreds of suggestions. They choose Marcella LeBeau for her humble, yet impactful service. She died in 2021 at the age of 102 leaving a legacy that is worth remembering. She embodied the characteristics of courage, compassion, and resilience throughout her life.
In speaking about her life's accomplishments, Marcella LeBeau stated, "It was the greatest honor of my life to serve."
A groundbreaking for Marcella LeBeau Elementary was held this past spring. The school is expected to open in Fall 2025.
