🎶 A fun Hawthorne tradition!
Ms. Kellengerger, our Hawthorne Success Coordinator, played the flute in high school. About six years ago she brought her flute to school to play with a student, and it sparked a tradition that’s still going strong!
Each year our 5th grade flute players join Ms. K. during their lunch for a little flute jam session. It’s a fun way to share their musical talents and make lunchtime a little more musical at Hawthorne! 🎵😊

Hello! This week begins the city-wide reading initiative Everybody Reads in Sioux Falls. The goal is to read 500,000 books across the community to support REACH Literacy, which provides important reading resources and classes for people of all ages.
Hawthorne students will track their reading from March 1–31 using their reading trackers. Our school goal this year is 10,000 books! Families are encouraged to read together at home, and adults can track their own reading by visiting Siouxland Libraries.

When we’re a little short staffed in the lunchroom, our fearless leader Principal Jones jumps right in and puts on the lunch server hat!

With 23 exciting events—from biology and chemistry to engineering and physics—there’s something for every young scientist.
It’s going to be a fun evening of learning, exploring, and celebrating science together!

With the 2025–2026 school year almost over, it is time to begin planning for the 2026–2027 school year. South Dakota State Law (SDCL 13-28-7.1) requires the following immunizations before your child can start school for the 2026–2027 school year.
Required Vaccines for Kindergarten Entry
(According to South Dakota State Law SDCL 13-28-7.1)
1: Diphtheria, Pertussis, and Tetanus (DTP/DTaP)
Four or more doses are required, with at least one dose given on or after age 4 and at least 6 months following the previous dose.
2: Polio Vaccine
Four or more doses are required, with at least one dose given on or after age 4 and at least 6 months following the previous dose.
3: MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
Two doses given after 12 months of age.
4: Varicella (Chickenpox)
Two doses given after 12 months of age, or a documented history of the disease is required for kindergarten entry (South Dakota Department of Health).
Families are encouraged to check their child’s immunization records now and schedule any needed appointments to ensure all requirements are completed before the start of the 2026–2027 school year.

Your entry fee to Air Madness on February 17 goes directly to 12 schools in the Sioux Falls area, most affected by poverty, to use in areas of greatest need. Activities include jumping, dodgeball, foam pits, and more.
PLUS, you only pay $30 for a Madness Pass good for the whole day*, and receive a $20 arcade credit for gaming at Union Social next door!
