Peek at next week for Whittier Middle School

Did you know that Whittier Middle School started as a small, one-room school house known as "The School East of the River?" It stood on the southwest corner of fifth and Franklin on the east side of the street, facing south. Throughout the years, they gradually added rooms and buildings. They moved students from building to building by wagon across the Prairie. What a sight that must have been! We have access to all these amazing photos and notes thanks to Lucia Watson, who was one of the first pupils of the old Whittier school, and later became a teacher. We are excited to share more Whittier history every throwback Thursday!

Ms. Simpson had fun with her 6th grade Resource Math class this week! Students were given a check with THEIR name on for $1M and a worksheet to track their spending. They HAD to purchase a home, a vehicle and a 4 year college education. Leftover money was theirs to spend or save. They started with choosing a city to live in and then used Zillow to find their house.
Things we learned:
1. How to research
2. Different cities have a BIG impact on cost
3. Cars are expensive...motorcycles are "cheap" 🤣
4. College is EXPENSIVE but worth it!
5. How to do practical math with large numbers
6. How to keep a running tally

Whittier Words of Wisdom from 1957-1958:
"Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as every you can."

September is Attendance Awareness Month. Regular routine is a key factor for children’s emotional wellbeing. School attendance plays a big role in creating a predictable, stable life and sets your child up for academic success.
If your student seems to be disengaged in school or averse to attending, it’s time to check-in on their mental health. Students may be avoiding school due to anxiety or other mental health concerns. Other symptoms to look out for include stomach aches, headaches, trouble sleeping, and changes in eating habits.
Talk with your school’s nurse, counselor, or social worker to see what supports are available to help keep your child in school. You can also find mental health treatment for your child at: https://sdbehavioralhealth.gov/mental-health/treatment.
