For Valentine’s Day, classroom 206 made special magnets. They used their thumbprints to make the shape of a heart and then applied it to a magnet. After making their magnet, students enjoyed a sweet treat: wafer cookies dipped in icing with sprinkles!

Junior Kindergarten Academy is a free, full-day educational program designed for students who meet the age requirements for kindergarten but may not yet be emotionally, socially, or academically prepared for the demands of a traditional kindergarten classroom. The Junior Kindergarten Academy is offered at three elementary schools: John F. Kennedy Elementary, Robert Frost Elementary, and Terry Redlin Elementary. Meaghan Neuberger D.D.S. with Dental Essence visited kindergarten classrooms to talk about the importance of taking care of your teeth. Students learned how to properly brush and floss, along with the importance of limiting sugar. Students even practiced brushing the teeth of some new friends!

Wow, Discovery! Not only did you fill another five Feeding South Dakota barrels, but donations also overflowed onto the floor. Several classrooms earned a pajama day and a visit from Discovery’s mascot, Astro! Thanks to your generosity, we collected an amazing amount of food to support local families in need. It was inspiring to see students come together, show kindness, and make a real difference in our community.
Classroom 206 students can earn “secret student” by listening to the teacher during lessons, following classroom and school rules, and being kind to others. Last week, Lilly earned “secret student”! She got to have lunch in the classroom with Ms. Rokusek along with three friends. Way to go, Lilly!
Classroom 101 celebrated 101 days of school. They were reminded of the Disney classic “101 Dalmatians” and had a PAWsome day!
These two kindergarten friends strike their strongest poses, proudly showing off their muscles and big smiles. One flex says, “I’m tough,” the other says, “I’ve got your back,” and together they’re basically unstoppable. Surrounded by bristle blocks, connecting discs, and teamwork, it’s a sweet reminder that confidence and friendship make the best superpowers.

On Monday, February 2, Discovery looked like a retirement community! It was the 100th day of school and students dressed up as if they were 100 years old. We had some great looking grandmas and grandpas!
Way to go, Discovery! You’ve already filled five Feeding South Dakota barrels. We’ve got more barrels on the way, so let’s see if we can fill another five! Again, this “Super Bowl Food Drive” is to help stock the food pantry at Feeding South Dakota and to have some fun before the NFL Super Bowl! Students are encouraged to bring non-perishable items such as:

- cereal, oatmeal, and pancake mix
- canned fruits and vegetables
- rice and pasta
- kid-friendly snacks and granola bars

Classroom 101 has been working on writing fantasy stories! Students wrote about make-believe class field trips. Some of the stories included trips to cookie land, candy land, and outer space!

Former Discovery student, Julia Shanks, visited classrooms 301 and 303. Julia currently attends Jefferson High School, participates in the Miss America program, and started her own small business. Julia shared her pageant and small business experiences with students, along with encouraging students to follow the Explorer Way: Take care of yourself, take care of others, and take care of this place.
