Just like classroom K05, Student Council also celebrated Earth Day last Tuesday by picking up garbage around the school and enjoying the sun!

Discovery yearbooks are here and will be sent home with students today! If you did not order a yearbook and would like one, we have a limited amount available. We will not hold one - they are available on a first come, first served basis. The cost is $20 payable in the office via cash or check. Cash payments need to be the exact amount because we do not have change. Checks should be written out to Discovery Elementary.

It’s not everyday that your principal pushes you on the tire swing during recess! #elementaryprincipal #recessfun #studentprincipal

Last Tuesday, classroom K05 celebrated Earth Day by picking up garbage around the school, “grounding” with the grass, and soaking up the sun!

What’s for dinner? Problem solved! Support Discovery’s PTO by dining at Culver’s at 2509 S Louise Ave (by Home Depot) tonight from 5:00 – 8:00 pm! PTO will receive 10% of all orders (dine-in, drive-thru, or carry out).

Discovery PTO’s annual Discovery Day Bash is on Friday, May 16, from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm. For this event to be a success, PTO is asking for volunteers. There are 30 minute time-slots available for set-up, running a game, or clean-up. If you can help, sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C44ADAD2CA3FF2-56026061-discovery#/. Students/older siblings are welcome to volunteer; however, if they are under the age of 13, they need to volunteer with an adult.
This year’s event is particularly special as it’s Discovery's 20th anniversary, making it a milestone event for the school and community - please help make it a success!

Author Wendy Ewald’s, “The Best Part of Me” is a powerful collection of photographs and student-written reflections that promote self-image and appreciation for unique qualities. Students in classroom 203 and 204 chose their own "best part" and wrote an opinion piece including three reasons why they chose it. This project celebrates student individuality and contributes to a positive self-esteem! See what students chose as their best part at https://youtu.be/AjsGreF7zFk.

Fourth grade students are enjoying recess and the sunshine! #happinessisasunnyday

We are collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) through the end of April. RMHC provides a temporary home-away-from-home for families of ill or injured children being treated at nearby medical facilities.
Just as in previous years, grade levels K-2 and 3-5 are competing to see who can collect the most pop tabs. The winning group will earn a pajama day and bragging rights! There are tall cylinders for students to drop their pop tabs in, so keep on bringing them!

Classroom 305 hosted visitors from the Spotlight Theatre Company's "Plays For Living." They performed a locally written musical based on the book, "A New Norm." The book was written by a South Dakota author and is all about giving yourself grace, quieting the storm in your head, and powering through challenges!

Fifth grade students participated in a "Career Cafe" event with USD Health Sciences professors and students who volunteered their time to expose students to health careers in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Public Health, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Dental Hygiene, and Nursing. Students solved a crime using DNA and blood typing, tried out different occupational therapy tools, viewed a patient mannequin, discussed social work case studies, learned about dental health, and so much more. Thank you, USD Health Sciences!

Classroom 501 students got encouragement letters from a family member to read before starting state testing this week! #doyourbest #yougotthis

Classrooms 203 and 204 have been battling it out in an epic March Madness Book Battle! They started with 16 amazing books, each carefully chosen by their students. Round by round, they voted to narrow the list - eliminating books until only the top contenders remained. The championship round was between “I'm a Unicorn” by Helen Loon and “I Broke My Trunk” by Mo Willems. Their 2025 March Madness Book Battle winner was. . . “I’m a Unicorn”!
