Reports to Building Principal
Receives Guidance from Curriculum Coordinators, Assistant Principal (where applicable), Department Chairpersons (where applicable), Instructional Coaches (where applicable)

Education Level

Bachelor’s degree and eligibility for or possession of valid South Dakota teaching certificate required. Student teaching or prior teaching experience in Spanish learning environment.

Experience Desired

Ability to share authentic-Spanish cultural experiences gained through personal experience living in Spanish speaking country or location. Previous Spanish Language Immersion program teaching experience desired.

Physical Requirements

Hand-eye, mind-eye coordination. Constant hearing; intermittent speaking, standing, walking and writing. Frequent carrying, keyboarding, and other repetitive motions.

Language Requirements

Native or near native Spanish skills with the ability to speak, read, and write fluently in Spanish and English. Meet District Spanish language competency standards for oral and written proficiency established through objective means selected by the District and through lesson demonstration.

Other Requirements

Skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Knowledgeable of teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students. Demonstrated skills in the use of technology to enhance student learning. Knowledge of theories and factors in first and second language development, universals and differences in language structure, theories and methods of bilingual education.

Essential Functions & Duties

  1. Ability to Plan and Prepare Instructional Tasks

    • Plan instructional tasks that are meaningful and related to learning goals

    • Collaborates with English-speaking partner teacher to make team decisions about language of instruction, pacing, and student progress in both language proficiency and academic content.

    • Collaborates with English-speaking partner teacher to determine goals and next steps for students linguistically, academically, and socially.

    • Collaborates in the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a specific language and culture elementary program.

    • Participates in curriculum development programs within the school of assignment and/or on a District level.

  2. Provide Instruction to Students

    • Implement District curriculum

    • Maintain a strong instructional focus utilizing the elements of effective instruction including strategies conducive to dual-language immersion, such as sheltered instruction, cooperative learning, and providing and eliminating language scaffolds based on student needs.

    • Provides instruction in Spanish for the purpose of achieving success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through defined lesson plans. Reinforce and respect the target instructional language environments as they exist in the school.

    • Administers tests and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating students’ language ability and academic progress.

    • Works cooperatively with colleagues, students and parents who are culturally, racially and linguistically diverse.

    • Communicate a high level of expectation

    • Communicate clear learning goals to students

    • Adapt instruction to meet the needs of all students

    • Address various learning styles

    • Sequence content at an appropriate pace

    • Use appropriate level of questioning to promote understanding

    • Relate lesson content to prior and future learning

    • Require students to summarize information in written and/or verbal form

    • Appropriately recognize and reinforce individual student effort

    • Represent knowledge/information non-linguistically through a variety of methods

    • Organize students in cooperative or ability groups when appropriate

    • Require students to analyze and apply knowledge

    • Display enjoyment, humor, and enthusiasm for teaching and expect students to enjoy learning

    • Conduct ongoing assessments for learning

  3. Provide Effective Classroom Environment

    • Collaborate with English-speaking partner teacher to establish appropriate classroom rules and procedures that are clearly understood by all students and as consistent as possible across the two languages and classrooms.

    • Effectively and consistently enforce rules and follow procedures

    • Redirect students naturally and immediately without disrupting others

    • Be well-organized and have all materials, equipment, etc., ready for immediate use

    • Carry out smooth and effective transitions (e.g., from one activity to another, as students enter and leave the room)

    • Maximize time on purposeful instructional tasks

    • Begin and end class period with focus on learning

    • Establish a positive learning environment

  4. Participate in Professional Growth Opportunities and Demonstrate Professionalism

    • Participate in ongoing professional growth

    • Participate in school/professional and/or community organizations or events

    • Complete routine assigned tasks and comply with District requirements

    • Promote the education profession

    • Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues, parents and students

    • Collaborate with the English-speaking partner teacher to provide consistent information to parents, students, and colleagues (when appropriate) about individual student progress in both language acquisition, grade level academic content, and social development.

    • Conduct parent-teacher conferences in accordance with District policy of DualImmersion conferences.

Working Conditions

Climatic Environment - Both Inside & Out

Some District classrooms and work areas are not climate controlled and are subject to extremes of temperature and humidity.

Hazards

Stairs, chalkdust and exposure to communicable diseases may be potential hazards. In labs/classrooms there could be exposure to toxic chemicals and fumes. Equipment that supports classroom instruction could be potentially hazardous under certain conditions.
