EDUCATION LEVEL:

Master’s degree in counseling from an approved school counselor preparation program. South Dakota School Counselor Certificate

EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

Previous experience in middle school setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Constant hearing, hand-eye and mind-eye coordination; frequent repetitive motions with wrists, hands and fingers, scheduling, sitting, speaking, walking, talking and writing are required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create positive relationships. Strong organizational skills. Ability to plan, organize, and work collaboratively with other teams.

Senior Coordinator of Student Support Services, Building Administrator

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES

  1. Provides counseling to individuals and small groups with personal concerns.

  2. Consults with teachers, staff, parents, and other significant stakeholders regarding the developmental needs of students.

  3. Participates in building problem-solving team meetings and supports a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTMDSS) model for delivering academic and social emotional information.

  4. Coordinates and implements middle school counseling curriculum in the classroom.

  5. Monitors and effectively communicates with parents about student progress.

  6. Maintains the confidentiality of students and their families.

  7. Refers students with significant challenges to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents.

  8. Plans, evaluates, and revises the building counseling program.

  9. Coordinates and conducts activities which contribute to the implementation of the middle school counseling plan.

  10. Provides help to students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, and experience career exploration during the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades which will prepare them for high school.

  11. Builds interpersonal relationships and establishes positive rapport with students, colleagues, administrators, and parents.

  12. Pursues professional growth.

  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

CLIMATIC ENVIRONMENT | Inside & Outside

Typically, work is conducted in a comfortable environment. Some District classrooms and work areas are not climate controlled and are subject to extremes of temperature and humidity.

HAZARDS

For some buildings, stairs, and exposure to communicable diseases may be a potential hazard. In science labs, there could be exposure to chemicals and fumes. Equipment that supports classroom instruction could be potentially hazardous under certain conditions. Travel between schools will cause exposure to hazardous driving and walking conditions.
