REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION LEVEL:

Master’s degree and endorsement in level of assignment. South Dakota Certificate.

EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

Three years successful teaching experience. Successful building administrative or leadership experience in Fine Arts.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires constant hand-eye and mind-eye coordination, hearing; intermittent speaking, writing, standing, and walking are also required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Must be skilled in some area of the arts. Effective oral and written communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management.

BRIEF POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Coordinator of Fine Arts (K-12) is responsible for providing direction to and advocating for the music and art programs in the district. The Coordinator of Fine Arts provides leadership in the development, implementation, and management of the fine arts programs for each grade level (K-12), provides guidance in identifying appropriate instructional strategies, oversees the maintenance of the Fine Arts programs to the Board of Education, the community, and the state. The Coordinator of Fine Arts is the is responsible for hiring, placement, appraising and providing professional development. This position is also responsible for developing a comprehensive K-12 Fine Arts curriculum. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES

  1. Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and management of the Fine Arts program for each grade level K-12), provide guidance in identifying appropriate instructional strategies, oversee the Fine Arts program, and represent the programs in the community and state.

  2. Provide feedback and support to Fine Arts staff through classroom observations and evaluations when called upon by principals and provides plans of assistance.

  3. Assist teachers in carrying out K-12 Fine Arts (music, art, drama) curriculum through visitations, demonstrations, suggestions, bulletins, and monthly staff meetings.

  4. Serve a dual role of Curriculum Specialist in developing a comprehensive K-12 Fine Arts curriculum and direct periodic curriculum revision process.

  5. Guide the selection of relevant instructional materials, e.g., textbooks, software, music, etc.

  6. Plan and deliver professional learning sessions.

  7. Provide assistance to classroom teachers and principals in instructional theory and practice.

  8. Recommend to Assistant Superintendent of Academic Achievement the assignment and observations of student teachers, interns, and observers of the Fine Arts Departments in the schools.

  9. Prepare, manage, and oversee the Fine Arts budget and requests.

  10. Provide placement assignments and specific schedules of all Fine Arts staff members.

  11. Serve as liaison for Fine Arts staff in communication with the School Board, Superintendent, and central office staff.

  12. Identify and create opportunities for professional growth of staff with respect to clinics, workshops, conferences, conventions, professional organizations, and appropriate in-service education programs, in cooperation with the Assistant Superintendent and principals.

  13. Collaborate with individuals in other departments, athletics, and curriculum specialist.

  14. Attend and/or lead various meetings, including but not limited to: Director Called Meetings, Fine Arts collaboration, Elementary, Middle School, and High School Principal meetings, Athletic Director meetings, and curriculum meetings.

  15. Serve on various community councils and committees.

  16. Assist in establishing and maintaining positive relations with civic, professional, service, and parent organizations in the community.

  17. Participate and provide interest, involvement, and leadership in community fine arts affairs.

  18. Consult with Human Resources on the interviewing, recommendation, and hiring of all Fine Arts staff.

  19. Submit an annual report to the Assistant Superintendent of Academic Achievement.

  20. Assist in planning of new or remodeled fine arts facilities.

  21. Compile, produce, and distribute K-12 Fine Arts, Athletic, and Special Events calendar for the schools.

  22. Recommend curriculum changes to the Assistant Superintendent of Academic Achievement for presentation to and adoption by the School Board.

  23. Provide leadership in communication with the State Board of Education and the needs of the Fine Arts.

  24. Provide leadership and coordination in statewide fine arts activities and works closely with the SDHS Activities Association.

  25. Communicate with lawmakers on the state and national level on the needs of the fine arts in the curriculum.

  26. Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

CLIMATIC ENVIRONMENT | Inside & Out

Typically, work is conducted in a comfortable environment. Some District classrooms and work areas are not climate controlled and are subject to extremes of temperature and humidity.

HAZARDS

For some buildings, stairs, chalk dust and exposure to communicable diseases may be a potential hazard. Equipment that supports classroom instruction could be potentially hazardous under certain conditions. Travel between schools will cause exposure to hazardous driving and walking conditions.
