November 10th marked the final day for our two beloved student teachers in second and third grade! Each student teacher had a 12 week placement here at All City and now will graduate soon. They will be missed dearly by students and staff! Molly Kelly was placed with Mrs. Rausis in second grade. Molly will graduate from Augustana University in December. She is originally from Sioux Falls and is excited to find an elementary teaching job in the area. She did an amazing job and will be missed! Amy Ptak was mentored by Miss Leloux in third grade. Amy will also graduate with a double major in December from Northern State University. She is originally from Marion, SD and plans to pursue a teaching career as either a special education teacher or elementary teacher in North Carolina! Amy is a natural in the classroom and her kind heart will be missed! We wish both of our student teachers the best of luck in their future teaching careers! They were both rockstars who built strong rapport/relationships with students, staff, and families! They will be missed dearly! Thanks for all of your help ladies! Good luck! Be sure to come back and visit!

Every Friday, the ACE kindergarteners and third graders read with their “buddy”! Siblings are always paired up which is super fun! It is good practice for all kids to read out loud and share in the love of reading! Look how cute they are!

Student Council elections were held on Monday! The polling booths were full with a great turnout! Kindergarten got to vote on their favorite food while the first through flfth grade voted on the Student Council reps they wanted to represent for their class. Each class voted for two reps. Thank you to Rob Hollan for organizing the election and running our Student Council!

Our November swimming experience at Embe was tons of fun! Swimming is always such a big highlight event for all of the kids each month! The 2nd and 3rd graders got a special surprise (since it was the student teacher’s last swimming event) by having Miss Leloux, Miss Ptak, and Miss Kelly joining them in a swim! By the looks of it, it seems the teachers were just as excited as the students were! We are so thankful we get the opportunity to swim for extra exercise each month!

This past Saturday our third through fifth grade Girls on the Run participants from All City got to showcase all of their hard work preparing for their big 5k with all of the girls across the state who participate in GOTR! This past month or so these girls and their coaches have been training on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in and around the school. They learn lessons on both physical and mental skills! Every girl did an amazing job! Some even had family run with them on Saturday and had teacher fans cheering them on! Way to go girls!! Thank you, Girls on the Run Coaches, for volunteering your time for this great program!

What a fun time of year! In keeping with tradition, the Jane Addams staff unveiled their festive fall outfits on Oct. 31 to the students and parents on the playground! This year they were “Grammar Police” who were here “to serve & correct”! This is always a fun event the kids look forward to each year! They even got some special assistance in their entrance from the awesome Sioux Falls Police Department! The kids were ecstatic when they saw the BearCat & patrol car! After the reveal, the SFPD did a meet and greet with the kids and answered questions about their equipment and vehicles they brought! They even got some pictures! Thank you Officer Gannon (our SRO), Officer Johnson, and Officer Thelen for uniting us together and taking the time to talk with all of the students! Thank you to all of our SFPD officers for keeping us safe every day! We appreciate you!

And with a blink of an eye, we are already a quarter way through the 2022-2023 school year! The second quarter is here, and it’s a busy one! While this time of year tends to get chaotic, it’s important to remember how crucial student attendance is. Chronic absenteeism is a serious problem in South Dakota - a problem SFSD is committed to improving. Missing just two days a month can hurt a student’s grades and increase their chance of dropping out. Make sure your student is on the path to a bright future – and that starts in the classroom!

We had another successful School Store on Tuesday! They served so many kids popcorn and juice boxes! Thanks, parents, on your patience in the pick up line those days! Thanks to the Rock family and Tuesday 4th/5th grade volunteers for getting everything ready and the 4th & 5th grade students who volunteered at the store! Thanks for your support!

Read for the Record Day is October 27! Last year, 7,475 students from Sioux Falls and over 2.3 million children from around the world read the same book, ‘Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon’! This year Jane Addams readers listened to ‘Nigel and the Moon’ read by Tim Hoekman (former ACE parent and current firefighter). After the book, kids discussed what they wanted to be when they grew up! We can’t wait to see what dreams come true! Thank you, Tim, for taking the time to come in and read and answer questions about being a firefighter! Thank you, Ms. Becker, for organizing and lining up our school’s event! Lots of fun!

DrumFIT is so much fun!! Last week, Miss Leloux led the first, third, fourth, and fifth graders in a cardio brain break by pounding away on the drums (yoga balls)! Kids got to use drumsticks and follow a routine on the yoga balls. It is a great way to get some movement in during the day and dance/sing to their favorite songs! This equipment was donated through sponsors from a Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation grant a couple years ago! So cool! The second graders and kindergarten will get a chance next time they are set up! Big thanks to Mrs. Anderson for the use of her room!

Our All City 5th graders had a chance to attend their first Starbase day! DoD STARBASE is a premier educational program, sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. At DoD STARBASE students participate in challenging “hands-on, minds-on” activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). They interact with military personnel to explore careers and observe STEM applications in the “real world.” The program provides students with 25 hours of stimulating experiences at National Guard, Marine, Air Force Reserve, Army, and Air Force bases across the nation. DoD STARBASE’s primary focus is the program for fifth graders. The goal is to motivate them to explore STEM opportunities as they continue their education. The academies serve students that are historically under represented in STEM. Students who live in inner cities or rural locations, those who are socio-economically disadvantaged, low in academic performance, or have a disability are in the target group. The program encourages students to set goals and achieve them.
