Dr. John W. Harris Teacher of the Year Award Nominations Are Now OPEN!

Dr. Harris led the school system with compassion and integrity, touching the lives of thousands of students, teachers and employees, and guiding the system to be one of the finest in the country. He is remembered for his gentleness, humility, graciousness, professionalism, intelligence, and his sincere interest in people. He lived his philosophy that human contacts are the key element to education.
The SFSD is proud of our staff and teachers for their commitment to our children and encompassing the same values and passions as Dr. Harris! It's hard to believe, but it is that time of year already! #Daylightsavings #FallBack. Don't forget to set your clocks back 1 hour before bed on Saturday!

Welcome to K Y D Z, the radio station that plays the hits while you sing along! Come see disc jockey Marvelous Mike and sidekick Jivin’ Judy as they play the oldies, the goodies and the songs kids have loved to hear throughout the ages! Evening performance at 7:00pm.

And with a blink of an eye, we are already a quarter way through the 2022-2023 school year! The second quarter is here, and it’s a busy one! While this time of year tends to get chaotic, it’s important to remember how crucial student attendance is. Chronic absenteeism is a serious problem in South Dakota - a problem SFSD is committed to improving. Missing just two days a month can hurt a student’s grades and increase their chance of dropping out. Make sure your student is on the path to a bright future – and that starts in the classroom!

"Our World at Oscar Howe"
The English Learner (EL) program is designed to provide academic language support to students acquiring the English Language in grades K-12. The program is aligned with the state English Language Development standards.
Our world here at Oscar Howe Elementary has become larger and our eyes have become wider. Very neat to see where some of our students are from.

When we say we received so many great pumpkins - we mean we received SO MANY GREAT pumpkins. Wow! We had over 130 pumpkins brought in. It was hard to choose just one per grade level, but the votes are in!

Today, October 27th is Read for the Record Day! Students could follow along to a virtual session with either Mayor Paul TenHaken or Vaney Hariri, Co-Founder of Think 3D Solutions.
The goal of Read for the Record day is to see how many students and adults can read the same book on the same day! We were able to catch a glimpse of K03, 303, 504 and the library participating.

Today marks the 23rd Annual Lights On Afterschool event! Launched over 20 years ago, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities.
In honor of this event, Kids Inc. staff at all locations will be hosting celebrations throughout the next two weeks for students and families to participate in. Activities include talent shows, cookie decorating, pumpkin paintings, dance parties, art shows, scavenger hunts, and carnivals! These events are meant to bring awareness to the importance of quality after-school programs for kids.
Please help us say thank you to our Kids Inc. staff who play a MAJOR role in so many of our students' education journeys. We are incredibly thankful for each and every one of them for their dedication to the District and our students!

Students must wear a jacket if it is 59 degrees or colder. 60 degrees or above, no jacket needed. Please help encourage students to dress appropriately for the cooler weather.
We thank you for partnering with us to make sure students dress for success regardless of the weather. Please take a look at the picture below for a complete look at our Oscar Howe dress code policy as well.
