Jefferson High School is proud to announce the launch of the College and Career Access program, a new initiative designed to help students and families overcome barriers to success after high school. Backed by a generous $400,000 donation to the Sioux Falls Promising Futures Fund, the program began this fall at JHS as a pilot, with hopes of expanding to other high schools in future years.
The program brings five new staff members to Jefferson, all dedicated to guiding students and families toward brighter futures. Leading the team is Director Jessica Carlson, along with college and career advisors Kate Telkamp, Jesus Gonzalez, Bradyn Medrano, and Myah Selland.
At its core, the program ensures that every student knows they have multiple options after graduation. While one goal is to provide pathways out of poverty, the program is designed to support all students as they explore opportunities, overcome challenges, and plan for life beyond high school. “We want students to know that there are multiple possibilities and that our staff is here to help them navigate their journey and overcome any barriers,” said Director Carlson.
Advisors are available daily in H202 and H213, offering support for a wide range of post-graduation pathways. Students interested in careers can receive help with exploration, planning, job shadowing, and preparing to enter the workforce. Those considering military service can access guidance on applications and enlistment. For students pursuing higher education, advisors assist with university and technical college applications, the FAFSA, scholarships, and college visits.
Support is available both in person and virtually, giving families flexible ways to connect with the team. Students can stop in during the school day, while parents may coordinate through their student’s counselor or reach out directly to Director Jessica Carlson to schedule an appointment.
Jefferson is excited to introduce this opportunity, giving Cavaliers the tools to dream big, make plans, and move confidently toward the future. Families can watch for updates about the College and Career Access team in daily announcements and the monthly newsletter.
