The driving purpose of the 1:1 Student Technology Initiative is to increase student engagement, further involve students in active learning, and provide students with 21st Century skills such as communication, problem solving, and collaboration, along with content expertise. To integrate this technology into curriculum and instruction and to promote differentiating instruction to meet the needs of students, the 1:1 initiative will focus on academic achievement, student engagement, and customized learning.
Today, we live in a technology and media-driven environment, marked by access to an abundance of information, rapid changes in technology tools and the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. Effective citizens and workers must be able to exhibit a range of functional and critical thinking skills, such as: information literacy, media literacy, ICT literacy (Information, Communications and Technology).
Today's life and work environments require far more than thinking skills and content knowledge. The ability to navigate the complex life and work environments in the globally competitive information age requires students to pay rigorous attention to developing adequate life and career skills, such as: flexibility and adaptability, initiative and self-direction, social and cross-cultural skills, productivity and accountability, leadership and responsibility.

1. What is the 1:1 Technology Initiative?
The 1:1 Student Technology Initiative is a strategic initiative to educate all students one student at a time. The driving purpose of the 1:1 Student Technology Initiative is to increase student engagement, further involve students in active learning, and provide students with 21st Century skills such as communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, along with content expertise. The 1:1 Initiative focuses on academic achievement, student engagement, and the customized learning that is important for success in today’s world.
2. Which students will be getting what devices?
Phase I of the 1:1 Student Technology Initiative includes Chromebooks being purchased for students in grades 3 - 12 through the FY14 budget while Phase II calls for equipping students in grades K - 2 with iPads as part of the FY15 budget. So starting in August, 2013, students grades 3-12 will be receiving Chromebooks. Starting in August 2014, students K-2 will receive their iPads.
3. How will the checkout/check in process work?
Building principals are in the process of collaborating and creating a checkout/check in process for students.
4. Why is the Sioux Falls School District doing this?
Students today live in a technology and media-driven environment, evidenced by access to an abundance of information. The ability to navigate the complex life and work environments in a globally competitive information age requires students to possess a range of critical thinking skills along with technology skills to prepare for success in college and careers. Students will move from primarily consumers of information to evaluators and producers in order to promote curiosity and innovation.
5. What kind of research has gone into this decision?
The District had made available in 2011-12 and 2012-13 Technology Innovation Grants for classroom teachers. A priority of the grants was to evaluate the impact of the technology and resultant instructional strategies on engagement and customization of learning. The Technology Innovation Grant money provided District teachers an opportunity to explore, promote, and evaluate the integration of new technologies into classroom curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The information provided by the 2011-12 Technology Innovation grant participants helped establish the direction the District should take for the 1:1 Student Technology Initiative
6. Have other schools in South Dakota done this, or other school Districts our size?
No other school districts in South Dakota has done a 1:1 with Chromebooks. However, other South Dakota school districts have done 1:1 with laptops and iPads.
7. How did you pick Chromebooks and iPads?

8. Will my student be bringing this device home?
Students in Grades 9 – 12 will be able to bring their Chromebook home.
9. Does this technology mean the end of textbooks?
At this time there is still a need for textbooks. As the District prepares for curriculum studies, it will be looking at digital resources to determine if they meet the content standards and are economically feasible to purchase.
10. Does this mean students won’t learn how to write with a pencil or pen anymore?
Students will be using a pencil and pen because those devices are still needed.
11. I have a high school student who will be bringing a Chromebook home, but we don’t have internet access at our house. What is my child supposed to do?
Students will continue to have access to school libraries and other areas of the school before and after the school day, as they do now. There are also numerous free wireless “Hot Spots” in Sioux Falls including throughout downtown and the public libraries. You will be able to view Google documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and drawings even when you don't have an Internet connection. You're also able to edit Google documents, presentations, and drawings offline.
12. What is my student’s obligation with this technology?
The student’s Chromebook is an important learning tool and is for educational purposes only. In order to take your Chromebook home each day, Grade 9 - 12 students are required to accept the following responsibilities.
- When using the Chromebook at home, at school, and anywhere else, I will follow the policies of the District – Acceptable and Ethical Use of Technology Resources (IJNDC/IJNDC-R) and abide by all local, state, and federal laws.
- I will treat the Chromebook with care.
- The Chromebook is my responsibility and will stay in my possession at all times.
- I will not modify any software on the Chromebook.
- I will not release personal information to strangers when using the Chromebook.
- I will bring the Chromebook to school every day.
- I will keep all accounts and passwords assigned to me secure and will not share these with any other students.
- I will clean the Chromebook using only the cleaner provided by the District.
- I will recharge the Chromebook battery each night.
- I will return the Chromebook when requested and upon my withdrawal from the District.
- I will leave the Chromebook in its protective case.
- I am financially responsible for any physical damage to the Chromebook.
13. How much do I have to pay for this?
The Chromebook is being loaned to each student in Grades 9 – 12. For students in Grades 3 – 8, the Chromebooks will remain in the classroom. There is no cost for a student’s access to a Chromebook. (The student is responsible for any physical damage to the Chromebook.)
14. What if my student breaks her device? Do I have to pay for a new one?
This equipment is, and at all times remains, the property of Sioux Falls Public Schools (District) and is loaned to the Student/Borrower for educational purposes only for the academic school year. South Dakota statute allows the District to obtain reimbursement from, or on behalf of, students for any physical damage to, loss of, or failure to return school property. The full cost of the Chromebook will vary, based on the insurance plan. By signing the Student/Parent Computer Loan Agreement, the Student/Borrower acknowledges and agrees that his/her use of the District Property is a privilege and agrees and acknowledges it is his/her responsibility to protect and safeguard the District Property and to return the Chromebook in good condition and repair upon request by District. The District is offering a Computer Damage/Loss Cooperative Program to provide protection against damage and/or loss of the loaned computer and equipment in your care. Participation in this program is VOLUNTARY.
15. What if the device fails through no fault of my child’s?
The Chromebooks will be under warranty the first year for those devices where functionality is an issue because of faulty parts. The District will be prepared and able to replace devices as needed with spares, should a Chromebook need to be repaired.
16. No Sound From Headphones
If your sound continues to play from the external speakers when plugging in headphones try:
- Click where your time is shown (by default it is in the bottom right corner) to bring up the main popup settings menu.
- Next to the volume bar click the arrow and under the Output make sure Headphone is checked.
- Finally verify all apps/extensions NOT installed by SFSD have been removed.
17. How is this initiative going to change curriculum and the school day?
The District will study research-based digital content and resources for curriculum across all grade levels and content areas to ensure teacher understanding and alignment of instruction to Common Core Standards and/or State Standards according to the curriculum revision cycle.
Teachers will strive to ensure students experience methodologies via digital delivery of content and instruction to develop digital literacy skills to be globally competitive by developing and sharing lesson plans and ideas and digital projects to utilize online learning to transform instruction.
18. Where is all the money coming from to pay for these 22,000 devices?
Dollars from the District’s capital outlay funds are used for maintenance, construction, and equipment. Thus, these capital outlay dollars will support the District’s Technology Plan to fund the devices.
19. What happens if my high school student forgets to charge his Chromebook overnight? Can he not participate in class?
Without a charged Chromebook, students may miss out on technology-related instructional activities that day. Perhaps, students may be able to charge their Chromebooks for short durations during the school day. Each school may have a very small number of “loaner” laptops available on a limited basis.
20. What kinds of things will students be doing with these devices?
Students will be creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and projects. They will be able to do so collaboratively because documents can be shared among the users. Students will be completing assignments online and then uploading them again online to their teachers. Because of the constant internet connection, students will be able to collaborate not only with immediate classmates, but with learners around the world.
21. What kinds of internet safety protocols/restrictions will be in place?
The same internet safety protocols and restrictions will be in place that are currently in place in the District. All Internet request are routed through the District’s content filtering software regardless of where a District provided Chromebook connects to the Internet.
22. Will the restrictions still be in place on a WiFi network outside of school? How is this possible?
The same restrictions will still be in place on a WiFi network outside of school. With the Chromebook management console, the same restrictions can be set for each individual device.
23. How long will these devices last before we need to buy new Chromebooks and iPads?
Students will be issued the same Chromebook for Grades 6 - 8 and then another Chromebook for the Grades 9 - 12 experience. The life expectancy for each device is four years before devices will need to be replaced.
24. What happens to the Chromebook if my high school student changes schools between years or during an academic year?
Upon enrolling in another school in the Sioux Falls School District the student can check the Chromebook in at the current school. The student's current school will send the Chromebook to the new school.
25. Why are teachers not getting chromebooks?
Teachers will be able to access the web (i.e. Chrome and Google Apps for Education, etc.) on their desktop computers or laptop computers just as their students will do using Chromebooks.
26. If you have CenturyLink and are experiencing problems...
If you are experiencing problems accessing the internet using a Chromebook on CenturyLink’s internet service there are two options. You can adjust the settings using a computer other than a Chromebook, or call the CenturyLink Technical Support Group.
To manually adjust the settings, and turn off DNS redirect on your network:
- On a computer OTHER than the Chrome book, go to this website.
- The option for “CenturyLink Web Helper” needs to be set to DISABLED. Set to disabled, then click SAVE.
- Wait about 5 minutes, then connect the Chrome book, and you should have access.

- You will need your account number from a copy of your bill
- When you get a support agent, request they “Disable DNS Redirect.”
27. Helpful links to connect Chromebooks to home wireless.
- Who is your internet service provider and who setup the wireless router at the location? Have them verify that the Chromebook connects to a free wifi hot spot.
- Once verified that Chromebook connects at free wifi spot have them contact their internet service provider (or the individual who setup the wireless router at the location)

Your district owned Chromebook can connect to the following types of networks.
Standards: 802.11 a/b/g/n
Security: WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA-Enterprise
Your district owned Chromebook (connecting to security enabled wireless routers at home) will need to have the SSID and security information entered within the wireless settings option (near the clock) while the student Google K12 account is logged in.
The student will need to get this wireless security information from the adult in control of the wireless router they are attempting to connect to.
To connect to your wireless network do the following.
- Click the network icon in the lower-right corner of your screen.
- Select your network status from the menu that appears.
- Detected networks automatically show up in the menu. To connect to a network, simply select its name and enter the security information for the wireless connection attempted.
If you don’t see your wireless network do the following.
- Click the network icon in the lower-right corner of your screen.
- Select your network status from the menu that appears.
- Select Join other... in the lower-left corner.
- Enter the network's information in the dialog that appears.
- Click Connect.
Information for this network is automatically saved so you can easily connect to this network again in the future.
