Promotion, Retention and Acceleration of Students

After initial placement a student may be advanced according to the student’s demonstrated performance. The Sioux Falls School District is dedicated to the best total and continuous development of each student enrolled and the professional staff is expected to consider placing students at the grade level best suited to them academically, socially, and emotionally.

Students will normally progress annually from grade to grade. Exceptions may be considered for elementary and middle school grade retention or advancement after being reviewed by a committee that includes, at a minimum, the principal (chair), classroom teacher (team leader at the middle school), a parent/guardian and a counselor. If the student is receiving special education services, the committee will include the student’s special education teacher.
