Middle School Honors Gifted Education Courses

The Sioux Falls School District will offer to students with exceptionally high academic and intellectual ability a challenging, accelerated, integrated, and enriched curriculum in the core subjects. These honors gifted education courses will be offered at Edison Middle School.

Steps to Enrollment:

  1. The Middle School Honors Gifted Education Program is open to all 5th grade students who have been identified for the “gifted education” program and who attend one of the Sioux Falls School District elementary schools.
  2. Parents/guardians must complete the online Verification of Enrollment form.
  3. Verification of Enrollment will be accepted from December 1 to January 10.
  4. Parents will be notified by February 10th with confirmation of enrollment in the Middle School Honors Gifted Education Program for the next school year.
  5. If your student was tested after January 10, please call (605) 367-7945 or email Jennifer Gunn.

Middle School Spanish Immersion

The goal of the Spanish Immersion program in middle school is to expand Spanish speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills and develop a multicultural awareness of Spanish speaking people around the world.
Fifth grade students in the Elementary Spanish Immersion program at Sonia Sotomayor continue in the Middle School Spanish Immersion program located at Edison Middle School. Middle school Spanish Immersion students receive classroom instruction in Spanish in three classes every day: Spanish science, Spanish social studies, and Spanish language arts. All other middle school instruction is delivered in English.
Courses and schedules are developed to best meet the educational needs of each child. In addition to the acceleration options noted below, there are options for students who may need additional support in reading or math.

1 Students will receive High School Credit for Spanish II beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

2 Students who achieve at least a 4 on the STAMPs will receive High School Credit for Spanish III beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

3 Students who have been identified as gifted may take Biology

4 Placement is based on standardized test scores (e.g. MAP, Smarter Balance)

5 Middle School health classes meet every other day for a semester. Middle School students must take two semesters of health over their three years of middle school to meet the high school graduation requirement of 0.5 health credit. If students do not take two semesters of health class in middle school, they will have to take a semester of health in high school.
Students who have been identified as gifted may take a Gifted Encore class for one semester in the place of either ICT (computers) or Health opposite PE. If students take a Gifted Encore class first semester opposite of PE, then they will take Health opposite PE second semester.

6 If students have completed their two semesters of Health opposite PE in 6th and 7th grade, they have the option of selecting an Encore class in place of PE, giving them 2 Encore classes in 8th grade. Encore classes include Art, ICT, FACS, CTE, and Humanities.

 

Computer Science Immersion

Students at George McGovern and Whittier Middle School develop projects using coding skills as part of their science classes. Their projects focus on the concepts they are learning in science. Twice during the year parents and the public are invited to a showcase to see what the students have created. Through the middle school computer science immersion program students gain the foundation for AP Computer Science in high school.

Middle School PRO-Time (People Relating to Others)

All sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students participate in PRO-Time everyday. PRO-Time is a structure to ensure that every student in the building is known well by at least one adult. Teachers and small groups of students meet everyday to strengthen relationships between students and a significant adult who will provide support and direction for each student.

Middle School Humanities

All eighth grade students enroll in one quarter of humanities. Students learn about life and people through art, social, musical, historical, and cultural perspectives.

 

Middle School Art

All sixth and seventh grade students enroll in a one quarter art class. Eighth grade students may choose to enroll in additional art classes. 

 

Directed Studies (DS)

All sixth, seventh and eighth grade students who do not participate in Band, Chorus, or Orchestra are assigned to Directed Studies (DS).

  • Each core teacher on each team is a Directed Studies teacher.
  • Grade level teams have DS scheduled at the same time each day.
  • The purpose of DS is to assist students with academic work. Students are able to go to each core teacher as needed during DS for assistance. DS is instructional time.

Middle School Music

All sixth grade students enroll in music for one quarter to explore their interest in music. 

Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students may choose to participate in band, chorus, or orchestra.
