Students Safety Patrols

School Safety Patrols are an integral part of the school pedestrian safety program. Students and parents rely on the School Safety Patrol to help protect students from the hazards of crossing roads and highways on their way to and from school.

The building principal will designate staff members who are responsible for training and supervising School Safety Patrol members. Prior to participating as patrol members, students will be required to complete a School Safety Patrol Application and have it signed by their parents. Patrol members will be trained annually using procedures and materials that are available from AAA South Dakota.

A “Safety Assembly” will be conducted at the beginning of each school year to train all K-5 students in pedestrian safety and in following Patrol directions.

Additional school traffic safety efforts are made by a city-wide traffic safety committee called the Pedestrians Avoiding Traffic Hazards (PATH) committee. The primary work of the PATH committee is to guide and coordinate activities associated with school traffic safety. Members of this committee are appointed by city government and it includes representatives from the public and private schools, Sioux Falls Police Department, City Engineering Department, South Dakota Safety Council, Sioux Falls PTA Council, and AAA South Dakota.
