Educational Philosophy/School District Vision, Mission and Views
It is the vision of the Sioux Falls School District to provide opportunities and challenges for each student to succeed as a lifelong learner in a changing world. The District values a highly trained and committed workforce, continually evaluating and improving their own and student performance. The District recognizes its role as a key contributor to the social, civic and economic foundation of this community. To achieve this vision, we must ignite the hearts and minds of our students, staff, families, the business community and citizens.
In keeping with the School District vision, the School Board has adopted the following mission: To educate and prepare each student to succeed in a changing world.
Furthermore, we believe that:
The District and its employees shall not promote any religious belief or non-belief, and none shall be disparaged. Instead, the School District shall encourage all students and staff members to appreciate and be tolerant of each other's religious views. The District shall utilize educational opportunities to foster understanding and mutual respect among students and parents, whether it involves race, culture, economic background, or religious beliefs. In that spirit of tolerance, students and staff members shall be excused from participating in practices that are contrary to their religious beliefs unless there are clear issues of overriding concern that would prevent it.
The District recognizes that one of its educational goals is to advance students' knowledge and appreciation of the role that religious heritages have played in the social, cultural, and historical development of civilization. Staff members shall present information as outlined in Policies IHAL – Religion in the Schools and at School Activities, IMB – Teaching about Controversial/Sensitive Issues, and IMD – School Observances and Ceremonies.
