Are you confused about how to take driver's education? Community Education offers state-certified Driver's Education. A state approved driver's education program meets the following minimum requirements: 30 hours of classroom instruction, six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and six hours of observation. A certified teacher with a driver's education endorsement provides the instruction. Student must be 14 years old before the start date of class.

We do NOT offer Adult Driver's Education.

Driver's Education Attendance Policy:

Students are required to attend thirty (30) hours of in-classroom instruction and a total of twelve (12) hours of in-vehicle training-this includes six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel driving as well as six (6) hours of observation, which involves sitting in the backseat of the car, observing the other student driver in the vehicle. Successful completion of Driver's Education includes both the in-classroom portion and the in-vehicle training.

Students will not be excused for family vacations, camps or extracurricular activities. Students who cannot commit to the required days for driver education should not register. Should the student be absent more than three (3) hours of classroom time the student will be dropped from the class and will not receive a refund. The student will be required to complete hours missed up to three (3) hours by completing required assignments, or if necessary, will be required to make up the time missed.

Student is NOT required to have their Learner's Permit prior to their Driver's Education class. Driving times are separate from classroom time and will be scheduled during class.

Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Policy: Students BTW time should begin after classroom portion ends. Students will schedule their BTW time during the first or second week of class.

It is absolutely essential for students to be at all BTW sessions. In order to provide a BTW session, the instructor must have a minimum of two (2) students in the car.

If a student cannot make his/her drive time and the partner cannot find a replacement, the BTW session has to be cancelled. The student who could not make the scheduled drive time will be charged a $50 make-up fee. The certificate will not be issued until the fee has been paid and the BTW sessions have been completed.

Students are advised to have a buddy on standby. Students may ask friends, classmates, relatives, parents to be on standby to ride along in case the other BTW student is a "no-show." By having a buddy on call, the student will be able to complete his/her BTW session as scheduled.

Effective January 1, 1999 South Dakota adopted the Graduated Licensing System.

Cancellation Policy
