Continuing Education Contact Hour Information

The SD Department of Education (DOE) Office of Accreditation and Teacher Quality has made some changes in the teacher renewal process, effective July 1, 2009. The DOE will no longer be accepting renewal credits unless pre-approved prior to July 1, 2009.

The DOE will accept Continuing Education Contact Hour Certificates for professional development participation.

If you have renewal certificates dated prior to June 30, 2009, you may still use them to renew.

The DOE has requested that Sioux Falls School District teachers document all building professional development on one form. Please use the Professional Development Plan Sheet Form to do this, which is located below under Related Documents.

On this form, you may list the following activities:
*Building in-service time
*Book talks
*Building-sponsored training that is not a Red Apple Workshop course (i.e. CGI, Senteo Clickers, SmartBoard, 21st Century Teaching and Learning, etc.)

You may not list the following activities:
*Staff meetings
*Collaboration
*Planning meetings
*Trainings sponsored by an entity other than the Sioux Falls School District
*Red Apple Workshop classes (you will receive a Continuing Education Contact Hour Certificate from the instructor)
*District-sponsored in-service
*Time increments of less than 30 minutes
*Do not include any activities for which you have received a Continuing Education Contact Hour Certificate from a District administrator and/or an instructional coach

Print the form below (under Related Documents), and record your professional development. The instructor/facilitator of each activity must sign the appropriate line on the form verifying your participation in the professional development activity. Moreover, print as many forms as you need during your renewal process. Your building administrator must sign and date each completed form.

Remember, when submitting contact hours, 15 hours equals one credit.

You must submit this form to the SD Department of Education along with your on-line renewal application at the time of your scheduled renewal. Do not send the form in at the end of each year.

Do not submit this form to your principal, Human Resources, or Staff Development.

If you are currently enrolled in an advanced degree program (i.e. master's, specialist's, doctoral) in which you will earn a minimum of six graduate level credits prior to your certificate renewal date, you do not need to utilize this form, nor collect Continuing Education Contact Hour Certificates for District professional development.

If you already have enough credits/Continuing Education Contact Hours to renew your certification, you do not need to utilize this form, nor collect Continuing Education Contact Hour Certificates for District professional development.
