Early Childhood Developmental Screening and Evaluation

Contact Person: Val Peters 367-7949

Adult working with toddlersThe Early Childhood Screening and Evaluation program is designed to locate, identify, screen, and if necessary, evaluate young children, birth through 5, who might benefit from early education services. Staff at this center assist parents in understanding the development of their child and have suggestions to support their child’s development at home. Screenings include motor, speech and language, cognition and concepts, personal-social, and vision and hearing.

Screening and evaluation are available to all children, birth to school age, who reside in the Sioux Falls School District. Parental involvement is a critical part of the screening process. For children whose screen results indicate developmental concerns, multi-disciplinary comprehensive evaluations are available and are conducted by certified professionals at the evaluation center. An interview conducted by a nurse provides for parent involvement in the evaluation. All evaluations conclude with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) team meeting to discuss the unique needs of the child.

This District-wide program is located at Central Services, 1101 North Western Avenue. Appointments can be made by calling 367-8488.
