Open Enrollment Procedures

The parent or legal guardian of a South Dakota kindergarten through twelfth grade student who wishes to enroll the student in a school other than the school to which the student has been assigned must apply to enroll in another district or another school within the resident district.  Applications for open enrollment are available at all Sioux Falls Public Schools or at the Instructional Planning Center at 201 East 38th Street. Decisions to accept or reject open enrollment will be based on the criteria listed under "Open Enrollment Application Standards" in School Board Policy JCA-R.

Open Enrollment Timelines

Applications for the succeeding school will not be accepted until December 1 of the school year preceding enrollment. Applications received by February 1 will be acted on by March 1. After March 1, decisions on open enrollment for the succeeding year will be made during the first week of June, the second week of August and at other times necessary to plan for staff and classroom space.  Applications for the current school year will be accepted throughout the current school year. Open enrollment transfers that occur during the school year will only be allowed at the start of a quarter or semester.

For more information about open enrollment, call your child's school or Instructional Support Services at (605) 367-7276.
